The market town of Penkridge is situated in the district of South Staffordshire in the county of Staffordshire, England and located between Wolverhampton approximately ten miles to the south and Stafford five miles to the north. A small but ancient town nearly in the centre of the Cuttlestone Hundred with a station on the London and North Western Railway. It lies on the River Penk from which its name is derived.
The huge crowds and traffic congestion attracted by Penkridge's market is but a continuation of the village's role in history. The site was and still remains today the town's cattle auction. Although farming was central to village life, Penkridge was also renowned for its racehorses. In the 18th century the village's narrow streets were swamped by horses, horse dealers, jockeys and gentlemen for the annual horse fair. It was in 1724 author Daniel Defoe said of the venue "In a word I believe I may mark it the greatest horse fair in the world for horses of value." The nearby Horse and Jockey inn whose name has been linked to the Penkridge Races goes back to at least 1754 and would have served the men who looked after them, known as jockeys in the 18th century.
The Chase Golf Club situated between Penkridge and the Cannock Chase forest is a challenging 18 hole parkland course in an open, countryside location. An extremely well maintained course looked after by a dedicated team of green-keepers, it offers ideal practice for high-handicappers and newcomers to the sport, and boasts large traditionally designed greens. The Chase is particularly popular with corporate groups and large parties and has a fully stocked pro shop and excellent clubhouse facilities. The course is easily accessed from both junctions 12 and 13 of the M6.
Penkridge is a lively village with many amenities. It is well known for it’s twice weekly market and monthly farmers market. Market Street, the main thoroughfare in the village has a number of small shops, some of which are housed in buildings dating back to the 15th and 16th century.
